SWIMMING IN HEAT

If anyone tells you that Slovakia doesn’t have a sea, he is only partly right. We are of course far from the real sea with salt water but we have quite a few of our own freshwater seas of our own – so don’t worry about escaping from the August summer heat. There are enough places to swim, windsurf, […]

HIGHER TEMPERATURE, HIGHER ALTITUDE…

July is the month when Slovakia’s main holidays begin. Schools are closed and children are ready for summer discoveries and adventures.  One Slovak mother decided to give her fifteen-year-old son a real gift – a trip to the highest peak of High Tatras, Gerlachovský štít (2655 m). Obviously he could not go there alone, someone of any age would […]

JUNE IN SLOVAKIA – ALMOST UNKNOWN AND HIDDEN TREASURES

Wherever I have traveled, one experience has struck me again and again. The best known and most advertised cultural or natural treasures usually fail to affect my emotions. Stuck in the tourist assembly-lines leading to them, I am constantly disappointed by the crowded, noisy and commercial environment that surrounds them. Therefore I like the almost unknown and hidden treasures […]

Viac ako sused – festival susedskej pohody v Bratislave

Včera, 4.6. 2018, otvoril slávnostný koncert v Slovenskom rozhlase Týždeň maďarskej kultúry. Tým len začala pestrá paleta kultúrnych zážitkov z iniciatívy Veľvyslanectva Maďarskej republiky v gescii Maďarského Balassi inštitútu v Bratislave. […]

MAY – LOVE IN SLOVAKIA

If you are willing to follow an old Slovak custom, this month may start very well for you. The condition is to kiss your beloved on May 1st under the blossoming cherry-tree. There are no instructions about what to do if there is no such a tree in sight. However, we may assume that the most important thing is to […]

THE WINTER IS OVER

„The spring is full of little winters“ croons Slovak singer Pavol Hammel. And it is true. In Bratislava, April is associated with the time when women discard their heavy furs and overcoats and begin to reveal their shapely beauty.

However, you can still ski in the frozen wastes of the northern region of our country, such as our unique mountain […]

THE HOT EXPERIENCE FROM THE COLD WINTER

In Slovakia you may find the coldest place in the Central Europe. It is in a small village called Oravská Lesná close to the borders with Poland. There you may „enjoy“ – 33,5 oC in winter and see how children are toboganing right off the roof of the local houses. You can imagine that people here are drinking spirits that […]

BRATISLAVA IN WHITE

„The best things are for free,“ singing Beatles in one of their songs. Snow is in Slovakia one of the free gifts from a God. You may check it in capital city, Bratislava, too. There are three possibilities – many winters you may see the snow in Bratislava only at billboards. Some years the God wants to reward us from […]

War in Bratislava

Christmas time all over the world is a celebration of peace and happiness. Not in Bratislava. This capital city of Slovakia slept for decades during the communist regime and not so long ago woke up. And everybody is supposed to know and hear about that! Why be calm and peaceful when Mr. Nobel invented dynamite and Mr. Un-kno-wn from […]
